Signs in ancient Greece

Whether and how the ancient Greeks knew and admit astrology, opinions differ.

Generally agreed that the evaluated as unacceptable and unenforceable.

What was accepted in astronomy practical and measurable side, the deep knowledge of celestial phenomena, their orbits, but also all the planets and properties of stars.

However there is sufficient evidence or even evidence, that what is now called astrology, was admissible at least in some circles insiders and perhaps some mysteries.

However, while Theophrastus states that "the Stoics, and especially Posidonius, are responsible for the introduction of astrology in Greece" by the Chaldeans, we are able to point out, that astrology was known a few centuries earlier, after the Orphic Hymns we read that "constellations define destiny, regulate the fate and life of people."

Hesiod, in fact, well before the Stoics, constitute (at the time) 'marriages take place when the planet Jupiter is in the sign of Pisces. " The father of medicine Hippocrates and downstream great physician Galen mention the influences we receive from the movement of stars and planets, which contribute to human health.




Democritus, who was not a doctor, has the same opinion. The Proklos indeed deliver us how the world ascendant horoscope is Cancer! The ancient Greeks knew what we now call "karma" simply called "antipeponthos". They knew and watched the progress of the soul. Plato gives a very characteristic descriptions of the trip.
