Plaka, Anafiotika, Athens

Anafiotika is a scenic tiny neighborhood of Athens, part of old historical neighborhood called Plaka. It lies in northerneast side of the Acropolis hill. First houses were built in the era of Otto of Greece when workers from the island of Anafi came to Athens in order to work as constructor workers in the refurbishment of King Othon's Palace. The first two inhabitants were G. Damigos, carpenter and M. Sigalas, construction worker. Soon, workers from other Cycladic islands also started to arrive there, to work as carpenters or even stone and marble workers, in a further buildings reconstruction period in Athens, but also in the following era after the end of the reign of King Otto.

Acropolis view from Plaka, showing the Anafiotika neighborhood

In 1922, immigrants from Minor East also established here, altering the population that was up to that time only from Cycladic islands. In 1950, part of this neighborhood was destroyed for archeologic research and in 1970 the state started to buy the houses. Nowadays there are only 45 houses remaining, while the little streets from Stratonos to the Acropolis rock are still unnamed and the houses are referred to as "Anafiotika 1", "Anafiotika 2" etc. The neighborhood was built according to Cycladic architecture and even nowadays gives to visitors the feel of Greek islands in the heart of the city, with white walls and small spaces, usually with the presence of Bougainvillea flowers. Houses are small and mostly cubic, small streets that often end up to ladders or even deadends at terraces, where one can sit and enjoy the night view of the city. "In this oasis of tranquility, nestled beneath the walls of the Acropolis, the intensity of Athens seems miles away"...

The Diakofto–Kalavryta Railway is a historic 750 mm (2 ft 5 1⁄2 in) gauge rack railway in Greece. Located on the northern Peloponnese, it runs 22 km from Diakofto through the Vouraikos Gorge and the old Mega Spilaion Monastery and up to Kalavryta, stopping en route at Zachlorou.

Mikrolimano, an island in Piraeus

Decades now the picture remains still in time and retains its old glory.

While moving in Piraeus no longer requires ... marine instrument , the distant past is alleged that the Piraeus was an island . Today , the largest port in the country and the Eastern Mediterranean between the big freight traffic , residents and indented coastline , and is hosting another natural harbor, beautiful Mikrolimano .

However , Beach Koumoundouros and beach Dilaveri look more like an island an urban landscape.

The reason
On one hand there is the sea and the other is  "dominated"  by many fish restaurants , and the café-clubs, one next to one the other looking forward for travellers .  Food dishes come  and go on the road , getting your your appetite statrted. Music and the cheerful voices heard from clients , while enjoying a coffee or a drink after ... the sea , and you have a picture of Mikrolimano.

Athens, Lycabetus Hill

Athens, Kolonaki, Lycabetus hill...long ago!

Mount Lycabettus, also known as Lycabettos, Lykabettos or Lykavittos (Greek: Λυκαβηττός, pronounced [likaviˈtos]), is a Cretaceous limestone hill in Athens, Greece. At 277 meters (908 feet) above sea level, the hill is the highest point in the city that surrounds it. Pine trees cover its base, and at its two peaks are the 19th century Chapel of St. George, a theatre, and a restaurant.

The hill is a popular tourist destination and can be ascended by the Lycabettus cable train, a cable railway which climbs the hill from a lower bottom and inside the rock at Kolonaki (The railway station can be found at Aristippou street). Lycabettus appears in various legends. Popular stories suggest it was once the refuge of wolves, (lycos in Greek), which is possibly the origin of its name (means "the one [the hill] that is walked by wolves"). Mythologically, Lycabettus is credited to Athena, who created it when she dropped a mountain she had been carrying from Pallene for the construction of the Acropolis after the box holding Erichthonius was opened.

Lycabetus Hill and the open theater where many concerts take place every summer

he hill also has a large open-air theater at the top, which has housed many Greek and international concerts. Among the artists who have performed at the Lycabettus theater included Ray Charles, Joan Baez, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown, Bob Dylan, Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, John Mc Laughlin, Gary Moore, Peter Gabriel, Black Sabbath, Nick Cave, Pet Shop Boys, Deep Purple, UB 40, Placebo, Radiohead, Moby, Massive Attack, Faithless, Whitesnake, Tracy Chapman, Patti Smith, Vanessa Mae, Brian Ferry, Tito Puente, Buena Vista Social Club and favorite theatre of Scorpions.

Signs in ancient Greece

Whether and how the ancient Greeks knew and admit astrology, opinions differ.

Generally agreed that the evaluated as unacceptable and unenforceable.

What was accepted in astronomy practical and measurable side, the deep knowledge of celestial phenomena, their orbits, but also all the planets and properties of stars.

However there is sufficient evidence or even evidence, that what is now called astrology, was admissible at least in some circles insiders and perhaps some mysteries.

However, while Theophrastus states that "the Stoics, and especially Posidonius, are responsible for the introduction of astrology in Greece" by the Chaldeans, we are able to point out, that astrology was known a few centuries earlier, after the Orphic Hymns we read that "constellations define destiny, regulate the fate and life of people."

Hesiod, in fact, well before the Stoics, constitute (at the time) 'marriages take place when the planet Jupiter is in the sign of Pisces. " The father of medicine Hippocrates and downstream great physician Galen mention the influences we receive from the movement of stars and planets, which contribute to human health.

Democritus, who was not a doctor, has the same opinion. The Proklos indeed deliver us how the world ascendant horoscope is Cancer! The ancient Greeks knew what we now call "karma" simply called "antipeponthos". They knew and watched the progress of the soul. Plato gives a very characteristic descriptions of the trip.
