What She Said by Margaret Wesseling

What She Said

When my sons went to America—
Ten years of silence.

You might ask if I was lonely.

I had thirteen cats
Who played in the yard for me.

And birds came to the yard
And sang to me.

And I would lie awake
And listen to the cars go by
To the center, to the bars
And later, listen to the cars go back.

There were a lot on Monday,
A lot on Tuesday, a lot on Wednesday,
 A lot on Thursday,
A lot on Friday . . .
